Every year, U.S. News and World Report puts out a ranking of high schools throughout the nation. The list includes more than 25,000 public high schools, magnet, and charter schools across the nation and the District of Columbia.
The ranking methodology considers multiple measurable factors, including college readiness, state assessment proficiency and performance, college curriculum breadth, graduation rates, and aggregated information about underserved student performance.
The 2024 rankings show a continuation of excellent education throughout the DMV, with multiple schools ranking among the nation’s top 200 high schools. These best-of-the-best schools are located in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, with several earning high placements in consecutive years.
District of Columbia
Within D.C. itself, two high schools again broke into the nation’s top 200. These are the three highest-ranked schools in the District:
- School Without Walls High School
As part of the District of Columbia Public Schools, this school has 902 grade 9-12 students. Notably, this year’s ranking research found the school boasts a more than 99% graduation rate, an increase from its 95% rate in 2023.

This magnet school operates within the Fairfax County Public Schools system using a STEM-focused curriculum. It has 1,967 grade 9-12 students with 100% of students taking at least one AP course and has a 100% graduation rate.
