While there’s plenty to do around the nation’s capital any day of the year, summer days are special. Beyond the year-round attractions, including monuments, world-renowned museums, plenty of brunch and dining spots, and the national mall, summer days bring with them longer evenings and plenty of festivals, food, and fun. Here are just a few things happening around the DMV in summer 2024.
June 22: Astronomy Festival
We’ve all taken in the night sky, but have you ever done it through specialty telescopes while hanging out on the National Mall? Join Hofstra University from 6-11 p.m. in front of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden to take a nighttime tour of the sky, led by Dr. Donald Lubowich, Hofstra’s Coordinator of Astronomy Outreach.
In addition to demonstrations and discussions, attendees will be able to view sun spots, nebulas, double stars, and more through specialty astronomy equipment. Learn more about the Astronomy Festival on the National Mall.
June 22-23: National Capital Barbecue Battle
Take a stroll down Pennsylvania Avenue to take in live music and indulge in more than 150 tasting opportunities from some of the best pitmasters around the country. Watch pitmasters go head-to-head competing for multiple titles, catch a BMX biking and skateboarding stunt show, and take the kids to make their own bobblehead at one of the featured art activities. Entering its 32nd year, this two-day festival has something for everyone. Tickets are required, though kids ages 12 and under are free. Check out the full lineup and get details at Giant BBQ Battle.
July 27-28: BC Festival by Broccoli City
Broccoli isn’t just your mom’s favorite vegetable to serve. In late July, it takes over Audi Field for an entire weekend of music, beverages, and food. With an A-list entertainment lineup featuring Meghan Thee Stallion and Little Yachty, along with more than 20 others, the BC Festival will be like no other event this summer. Ticketing options include field level and VIP experiences, along with one or two-day passes. Get the full details at Broccoli City Festival.
August 3-4: Water Lantern Festival
Take part in a magical night filled with food, music, and reflection. This once-a-year event gives each paying attendee an opportunity to design and launch their own water lantern in the National Harbor. Explore the event and get tickets at Washington DC Water Lantern Festival.
August 12-18: Metropolitan Washington Summer Restaurant Week
D.C.’s restaurant week isn’t something to miss. While it happens semi-annually, each occurrence features different participating restaurants, and each time, the pre-fixe menu is unique. With pre-set lunch and dinner prices accompanying the various options, this week is the best during summer to get out and try new restaurants around the area at a great price. Find participating restaurants and start plotting your reservations by visiting Metropolitan Washington Restaurant Week.
August 28-September 1: DC JazzFest.
Entering its 20th year, DC JazzFest brings more than 70 performances to stages throughout the District over a five-day span.
