Dreams of lounging on a beach in retirement may have been the goal for some people during their younger years. But the truth is, as we get older, we understand the importance of staying active — both mentally and physically — to keep ourselves happy and healthy.
In senior living communities across the greater Washington, D.C., area, residents have access to a variety of activities, events, and amenities that are designed with their needs and interests in mind in order to keep them engaged and thriving. This may include continuing education opportunities, artistic endeavors, guided fitness instruction and group classes, and social experiences, like game nights, walking groups, and organized trips. As you explore this collection of local senior living communities and consider those that are best suited for you, keep in mind the lifestyle you want to maintain in retirement and look for the amenities that will help you achieve your goals.
Local Partnerships Strengthen “The Art of Living Well” Programming at The Carnegie
Summer 2024 will herald the arrival of Gaithersburg, Maryland’s newest luxury retirement community, The Carnegie at Washingtonian Center.
This highly anticipated opening is preceded by a recent series of new partnership announcements that epitomize The Carnegie’s holistic approach to lifelong well-being, known as The Art of Living Well®.
The Carnegie has already secured more than 15 partnerships with cultural institutions, local artisans, and well-established health and well-being institutes that will provide residents with access to exclusive, custom- crafted experiences – both on and off campus. Each activity will be specially structured to support one or more of the nine dimensions of wellness in The Art of Living Well philosophy. For example, programming in conjunction with The Kennedy Center will include Sound Health Fridays at The Carnegie, which supports those with cognitive impairment by blending music therapy, memory care best practices, and occupational therapy.
One of the unique interactive experiences arising from the collaboration with the International Spy Museum is “Spy With Me,” designed for older adults living with dementia. This experience creatively integrates music and artifacts to explore historical spy stories. Recently, residents had the special opportunity to partake in an evening full of intrigue at the International Spy Museum.
The event included a captivating presentation by former CIA Director of Disguise, Jonna Mendez, followed by a multi-course spy-themed dinner where each dish held surprises, just like the covert world it emulated.
Through the Library of Congress, residents will have the opportunity to participate in unique educational experiences that support hands-on lifelong learning, such as assisting with digitizing records, including rare historical documents like John F. Kennedy’s Journal and the Veterans History Project, which focuses on archives on the Vietnam War.
Closer to home in Gaithersburg, the Carnegie is collaborating with Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream & Treats in a first-time venture for the popular local brand. Through this partnership, residents will enjoy a hands-on opportunity to co-create a signature ice cream flavor. Similarly, residents will have the ability to craft their own coffee blend with Rustic Route Coffee and distinctive candle fragrances with Fig & Fire.
To round out The Carnegie’s commitment to The Art of Living Well philosophy, new partnerships with Prime IV and Woodhouse Spa will focus on residents’ health and well-being through a variety of IV therapy treatments, therapeutic spa treatments, and wellness programs, promoting relaxation and rejuvenation. Partnerships will also be woven into on-campus activities, with The Carnegie Literary Society collaborating with Politics & Prose and the Gaithersburg Book Festival. Additionally, culinary programs and tasting room experiences will be enriched through collaborations with Lone Oak Brewery and The Wine Concierge.

The only faith-based, not-for- profit senior living and healthcare organization rooted in Northern Virginia, Goodwin Living elevates purpose and fulfillment for adults ages 55 and up. Through diverse programming across its three senior living campuses — Goodwin House Alexandria, Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads and The View Alexandria by Goodwin Living the organization also creates opportunities for older adults to be champions of social good.
